An Unanswered Question

Delivering Relief. Building Australia’s Future.

**
“We’re easing pressure on families now while investing
in the homes, healthcare and security Australians deserve.”

Our Government has just delivered the 2026-27 Budget. Here's what you need to know:
•    We’re levelling the playing field for first home buyers with a fairer tax  system.
•    We’re delivering more tax cuts from 1 July this year for every Australian taxpayer to help with the cost of living.
•    We're making Australia's fuel supply more secure.
•    We’re strengthening Medicare, so you can get the care you need without worrying about the cost.

This is only part of what we are doing in this Budget to help with the cost of living while continuing to bring down inflation. You can read more about the Budget at budget.gov.au

If you have any questions about the Budget or any other matter please send me an email at matt.thistlethwaite.mp@aph.gov.au, or call my office on 02 9349 6007.

A fair go for first home buyers

When you work hard and save, you should be able to buy your own home.

But right now, that feels out of reach for too many young people here in our community.

First home buyers are being priced out by property investors with tax breaks on their side.

So the Albanese Labor Government is levelling the playing field by reforming negative gearing and capital gains tax.

This is the next step in our plan to make housing more affordable.

We've already delivered 5% deposits for first home buyers, and we're setting aside 100,000 new homes built specifically for people buying their first property.

To make housing more affordable, we need to build more homes. That’s why we're also funding the essential infrastructure, like water, power and roads, that means new homes can be built faster in communities across the country.

This is about making sure that if you work hard and save, you can buy your own home.

It's a big change. But it's the fair thing to do, for first home buyers now and for future generations.

Tax cuts for all working Australians

You deserve to keep more of what you earn.

That's why we're delivering:
•    More tax cuts rolling out now.
•    An extra $250 off working Australians’ tax bills permanently.
•    A $1000 instant tax deduction without receipts.
All of this means the average worker will benefit by nearly $3000. And that’s on top of cutting fuel taxes to save you money when you fill up.

You'll start to see these tax cuts starting from 1 July this year, to help everyone in our community with the cost of living.

Maroubra Medicare Urgent Care Clinic is here to stay

Everyone should be able to access the care they need without worrying about the cost.

We've been working to strengthen Medicare since the election to make sure every Australian has access to free healthcare with just their Medicare card.

The 2026-27 Budget ensures this work will continue.
•    We're making free Urgent Care Clinics a permanent part of Medicare; ensuring the Maroubra Urgent Care Clinic is here to stay.
•    We're delivering a record boost to public hospitals
•    And we're making even more life-changing medicines cheaper.

This is on top of everything Labor has already delivered to make healthcare more affordable in our community:
•    We've increased bulk billing so you can see a GP for free, with 11 free Medicare Bulk Billing Practices in our community.
•    We've opened 135 permanent Medicare Urgent Care Clinics across the country, with more to come.
•    We've limited the price of PBS medicines to a maximum of just $25, or $7.70 for concession card holders.
•    We've provided record funding for public hospitals, including Prince of Wales Hospital in Randwick.
We promised to strengthen Medicare, and we're working hard to deliver on that promise.

Securing Australia's fuel supply

I know fuel security is front of mind for many in our community.

Here's what we're doing to secure Australia's long term fuel supply:
•    We're buying more fuel. We're growing our national reserves of jet fuel and diesel to 50 days, so Australia is better prepared for future shocks.
•    We're refining more fuel at home. We're investing in domestic refining capacity and storage, so we're not as dependent on what happens overseas.
•    We're keeping more fuel here. We're requiring gas companies to reserve 20% of their exports for Australia, so our energy needs come first.
In an uncertain world, the Albanese Labor Government is making sure Australia is prepared for whatever comes next.
