His Highness the Kuwait’s Prime Minister Sheikh Jaber Al-Mubarak Al-Hamad Al-Sabah’s meeting with Pope Francis was “another milestone in Kuwait-Vatican relations”, said a statement by the Kuwaiti Embassy in the Vatican. The statement came after the conclusion of H.H. It went on saying that Sheikh Jaber Al-Mubarak handed in a written letter from HH the Amir of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah to Pope Francis. HH the Amir’s letter included greetings from the Kuwaiti leader and an invitation for the Pope to visit Kuwait.

Pope Francis, on his part, commended His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah for his efforts within the humanitarian field which led to the UN honoring in New York last year. The UN named HH the Amir as a “Humanitarian Leader” and Kuwait as a “Humanitarian Center”. The statement touched on the meetings between the Kuwaiti and Vatican parities during His Highness Sheikh Jaber Al-Mubarak’s visit. The meetings touched on the regional situation in the Middle East and efforts to help refugees, namely Syrians, to overcome their plight. The meetings resulted in the signing of several memoranda of understanding on the foreign relations level. Kuwait was the first GCC nation to establish diplomatic ties with the Vatican in 1969.

The meeting was attended by First Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah Al-Khalid Al-Hamad Al- Sabah, Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Sheikh Khalid Al-Jarrah Al-Sabah, Deputy Foreign Minister Ambassador Khalid Sulaiman Al-Jarallah and members of the Kuwaiti delegation and the Kuwaiti Ambassador to Italy Sheikh Ali Al-Khalid Al-Sabah.
