Canterbury-Bankstown Council Community Update
Canterbury-Bankstown
Council has announced a series of decisions and community initiatives
focused on public safety, infrastructure, environmental sustainability
and support for local residents.
At its latest meeting, Council
called for stronger police action against illegal, high-powered e-bikes
and scooters, as well as tougher penalties and community service for
people convicted of vandalising public facilities. It also committed to
accelerating playground and sports-field upgrades across all wards and
confirmed the return of Lakemba Nights During Ramadan in February.** ** Council
adopted its 2026–27 Delivery Program and Operational Plan, outlining
new projects and how ratepayer funds will be invested across the City.
Mayor
Bilal El-Hayek also announced the return of the annual Mayor’s Lights
Out Sleepout, to be held at Belmore Sports Ground from Friday, 28 August
to Saturday, 29 August. The event will raise funds and awareness for
local charities supporting people experiencing homelessness.
** Tribute
was paid to Reginald “Reg” Chard OAM, a Villawood resident and
Australia’s last surviving Kokoda campaign veteran. Reg, who recently
died after celebrating his 100th birthday in 2023, was remembered for
his service and his message encouraging younger generations to use
manners, show kindness and help others.
Environmental
initiatives include the installation of electric-vehicle charging
stations at 12 locations across Canterbury-Bankstown, including Chester
Hill, Bankstown, Greenacre, Lakemba, Earlwood, Revesby and Panania.
Council also replaced deteriorated surfaces at 13 playgrounds and began
major upgrades at Stafford Walk Playground in Earlwood and Thomas Street
Reserve in Revesby Heights.

highlights included the successful Bankstown Bites 2026 multicultural
food festival, celebrations for three new local centenarians, the
commencement of construction on the Amitabha Buddhist Temple in
Bankstown, anti-bullying and resilience programs, and the 30th
anniversary of National Tree Day.Council
is also inviting nominations for its annual Children and Youth Awards,
recognising inspiring young people across the City. Nominations close on
Friday, 21 August.
The Mayor continued his community engagement
through Bilal’s Bus, recently visiting Villawood to hear directly from
residents about local concerns. |
