Sunsets After the Fire
New York Dr. Cesar Chelala
In spite of burned trees and ravaged land
the daily bombings
the wanton killings of civilians and pregnant women,
Bibi Netanyahu struts over carnage-
oblivious to the suffering of others,
searching for forgiveness that exists only in his imagination.
Far from his thoughts is the fate
of the children left without parents or limbs,
and a future with no dreams,
only nightmares.
Meanwhile,
a UN Commission reports
what Gazans have lived for generations:
their children are targeted and deliberately killed,
while the world looks away.
But, in spite of the wounds life has forced upon them,
Gazans will continue to watch the sunsets over their land,
carrying what cannot be stolen-
a love for their country
that no oppressor can crush.
Dr. Cesar Chelala is a writer living in New York.
