Helen Haines Run Down: Australia Shaken as MP Fights for Her Life Outside Electorate Office
21 October 2026
(See translation in Arabic section)
Sydney – Middle East Times Int’l:
An Australian MP was struck by a car on Monday and taken to hospital in a critical condition, in an incident that raised suspicions of a deliberate attack following comments by the Prime Minister.
Helen Haines, an independent federal MP representing the Victorian electorate of Indi, was hit outside her electorate office in Wangaratta. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the incident “was not an accident”.
Police declared the location a crime scene, with officers remaining at the site to continue their investigation and collect evidence.
Speaking to reporters, Albanese described the incident as an “attack” and said counter-terrorism officers and Australia’s intelligence agency were involved in the investigation.

Details of the Attack
According to information available so far, Haines, 65, was removing belongings from the boot of her car in a car park when she was struck by a white Toyota LandCruiser.
Witnesses said the driver appeared to pass the MP initially before making a U-turn and driving back towards her, striking her and trapping her beneath the vehicle.
Police are treating the incident as a deliberate attack suspected of having targeted the MP personally. They confirmed that the alleged driver, a 43-year-old man, would be questioned at Wangaratta Police Station later on Monday evening.
A local barber told Australia’s 7NEWS that he rushed to the scene, pulled the driver from the vehicle and wrestled him to the ground after finding what he described as a folding knife in the man’s pocket.
Haines, a mother of three who represents Indi in the Australian Parliament, was rushed to hospital. Victoria Police said she sustained “serious” injuries to her lower body.
Subsequent reports indicated that she was expected to be airlifted to Melbourne for further specialist treatment, amid concerns that she could lose a leg.
The information provided did not include official confirmation that the MP had lost her leg.
Prime Minister Responds
In his remarks to reporters, Prime Minister Albanese confirmed that Haines had been attacked and that a man had been arrested in connection with the incident.
“A major police investigation is currently underway, and I can confirm that a suspect is in custody,” he said.
“The Australian Federal Police, Victoria Police and Australia’s intelligence agency are working together on this case. The Joint Counter Terrorism Team has been activated, but the motive behind the attack remains unknown.”
Albanese said he had spoken with Victorian Premier Ben Carroll and Australian Federal Police Commissioner Reece Kershaw.
However, he stressed that the investigation remained in its early stages and that it was “too early” to provide further details about the circumstances.
The Prime Minister paid tribute to the injured MP, describing her as someone with “a sharp intellect, but more importantly, a truly decent person of integrity who is widely respected across Parliament and by everyone who deals with her”.
Growing Threats Against Australian Officials
Commenting on the attack, Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke pointed to an increase in reports of harassment and threats against senior public officeholders.
Burke said 951 reports of harassing or threatening behaviour against senior officials were recorded in 2024, rising to 1,067 last year.
Opposition Leader Angus Taylor described the incident as “a shocking day for the nation” and said he was personally praying for Haines’s recovery.
“No one should be targeted in this way. Australians will be outraged and shocked by the attack on Helen outside her electorate office,” Taylor said in a statement.
“Our country cannot become a place where violent attacks are normalised or accepted. I have spoken with the Prime Minister, and we are united in our position that political violence must never be accepted as part of public life.”
