Bassil pledges draft law on equality between women, men

21 Mar 2018

Lebanon - Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Minister, Gebran Bassil, disclosed at a press conference at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday an initiative which ensures equality between Lebanese women and men, based on the constitution, international agreements, and the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women.

"We will submit a draft law that ensures equality between women and men; it also gives women the right to grant citizenship to their children if they are married to non-Lebanese," Bassil said.

However, the Minister explained that those married to men from neighboring countries would not be able to benefit from this law due to the fact that the Lebanese constitution prohibited settlement and was committed to Palestinian and Syrian refugees' right of return to their homeland.

The Minister also mentioned a number of steps being taken, including a law on the restoration of nationality, in an attempt to equalize between Lebanese residents and expatriates
