OMAN, Iran ink pact for legal ties

28th, September 2016

 Sajjad Amiri –

Tehran – Sept 28: Attorneys general of Oman and Iran on Wednesday discussed ways to expand legal and judicial cooperation between the two countries.

Hussein bin Ali al Hilali, Attorney-General of Oman, who arrived here with a senior judiciary delegation, met his Iranian counterpart, Mohammed Jaafar Montatheri. The two sides signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for bilateral cooperation in legal and judicial areas.

Referring to the international transit of drugs from Afghanistan to Europe, the Iranian official said narcotics was posing “one of the biggest threats to our country and the entire world”.

Al Hilali said 900 cases registered in the last eight months relate to drug abuse, while most of the narcotic substances that are smuggled include heroin, marijuana and psychedelic drugs.

He said a majority of Iranian dossiers in Oman relate to drugs and human trafficking. The punishment for drug trafficking in Oman is death penalty, he told his Iranian counterpart. The Omani minister earlier met the first deputy of the head of judiciary system, Mohseni Ejaee, who expressed hope that visits between the two countries would benefit both in legal and judicial fields.
