When grief is dismissed, when injustice is normalised, and when suffering is met with silence, the consequences are felt far beyond the borders of the conflict zone.

The Fallacy of Antisemitism

The Fallacy of Antisemitism
New York             Cesar Chelala

Calling antisemites or anti-Israel those that--
Condemn the massacre of civilians caught in the middle of the Gaza war;
Denounce the repeated violations of international law
and basic rules of civilized behavior;
Condemn starving thousands of civilians
and the creation of a famine
of almost unprecedented proportion;
Call ruthless and cruel the actions
of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF)
which have caused more damage to Israelis
and to Israel’s prestige around the world
than anybody could do;
Condemn the eviction of Palestinians
from their own homes
and the settlers’ violence against Palestinians;
Condemn the almost total destruction of Gaza’s infrastructure,
hospitals, and social and religious buildings;
Call cruel and ruthless the displacement
of hundreds of thousands of people
from their homes to an uncertain but perilous
future, their hopes forever dashed;
Denounce the burying of thousands of children
under the rubble of buildings bombed to smithereens;
Call Bibi Netanyahu a war criminal
(as per the International Criminal Court)
who has all but destroyed a long Jewish
tradition of compassion and humanity
and has made Israel a pariah state in the world.
Question those Israelis that despite social pressure
still try to find an understanding with the Palestinians;
Question Israeli organizations such as Physicians for Human Rights
or B’Tselem for their reports on the abuse of Palestinians’ human rights.

Calling antisemites, I repeat,
those that call attention to those actions
--that have caused unfathomable levels of destruction
and death-- makes a mockery of that word and of the most elemental

sense of justice in the world.
