Millions warned as 'heaviest snowfalls of winter' expected to end the week

Sydney-Middle East Times Int'l: Millions of Australians have been urged to brace themselves as an arctic blast is set to chill southeastern parts of the country, with dangerous winds and snowfall expected in places not usually susceptible to such conditions.
New South Wales, Victoria, the ACT and even parts of South Australia and the Northern Territory will feel a chill as the cold front moves along from Wednesday until early next week. From now until Saturday, the usual locations, such as the alpine ski resorts, will be blanketed with up to 100 centimetres of snow.
Meanwhile South Australia, which hasn't experienced snow in 23 years, may also experience some winter magic.
"It's going to bring up a really cold air mass, not just over to the southeast, but through central parts of Australia as well," senior meteorologist Sarah Scully from the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) told Yahoo News. "We are expecting the snow level to drop to really low levels, particularly with a strong front that's expected to cross the southeast on Friday and Saturday.
"Slurries are possible across areas that don't usually see it. In South Australia, like the Mount Lofty Ranges, there's potential for a dusting of snow... The last time SA saw snow was back in 2002."
Snow is likely in NSW towns including Orange, Bathurst and Oberon, and even elevated parts of the ACT.
The bureau said it's likely the cold front will deliver the "heaviest snowfalls of the winter" so far, and residents have been urged to "prepare now"

Not only will snow fall across many parts of the country, but gale-force winds of more than 100 km/h are expected in the region across NSW and Victoria. The State Emergency Services (SES) have issued severe weather warnings to the Illawarra, Blue Mountains and Alpine regions in a bid to flag the upcoming weather and tell residents to hunker down.
While the conditions are set to ramp up from today, some are already feeling the effects of the cold front. In the last 24 hours, Victoria has copped strong winds of up to 128 km/h at Mount Hotham, 122 km/h at Mount Buller and 107 km/h at Falls Creek.
Inner-city Melbourne has also felt the effect of the cold front, with St Kilda copping 100 km/h winds.
Many chairlifts at ski resorts were already halted on Tuesday due to strong wind gusts, reaching up to 80 km/h at Thredbo and 91 km/h at Mount Hotham. |
