The Purpose of Life in Islam: Worship, Knowledge, and Preparation for the Hereafter
Introduction
What is the purpose of life? For a believer, this is not just a question of thought, but one that shapes how we live and see the world. Islam gives a clear answer: our purpose is to worship Allah, try our best to be good in our actions and character and prepare for the Hereafter.
Allah (SWT) says in the Qur’an:
"Does man think that he will be left neglected?"
(Surah Al-Qiyamah, 75:36)
This verse reminds us that life has meaning and our actions have eternal results.
1. Worship as a Way of Life
Allah (SWT) says:
"And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me."
(Surah Adh-Dhariyat, 51:56)
Worship (ibadah) is not only about prayer or fasting. It includes every action done for the sake of Allah. Ibn Taymiyyah said:
“Worship is everything Allah loves and is pleased with, whether it is something we say or do, seen or hidden.”
Prophet Ibrahim (alayhi as-salam) showed true worship. Even when people opposed him, he obeyed Allah fully even being ready to sacrifice his son. Allah (SWT) praised him:
"Indeed, Ibrahim was a nation unto himself, devoutly obedient to Allah."
(Surah An-Nahl, 16:120)
2. Life as a Test
Allah (SWT) says:
"[He] created death and life to test you as to which of you is best indeed."
(Surah Al-Mulk, 67:2)
Life is a test. Both good and bad times help us grow in faith.
The Prophet (PBUH) said:
“If Allah wants good for someone, He puts them to trial.”
(Sahih Bukhari)
Prophet Yusuf (alayhi as-salam) was betrayed, sold and put in prison. Yet, he stayed patient and trusted Allah. His story shows that even in hard times, life has a purpose.
3. Knowledge and Awareness of Allah
Allah (SWT) says:
"Indeed, only those who fear Allah among His servants are those who have knowledge."
(Surah Fatir, 35:28)
Knowing Allah through His names, signs and creation is part of our purpose. The first word revealed to the Prophet (PBUH) was:
"Read, in the name of your Lord who created..."
(Surah Al-‘Alaq, 96:1)
Islam respects scholars because their knowledge brings people closer to Allah.
The Prophet (PBUH) said:
“The scholars are the heirs of the prophets.”
(Abu Dawud, authenticated by Al-Albani)
4. Service and Legacy
Allah (SWT) says:
"Whoever saves one life, it is as if he had saved all of mankind."
(Surah Al-Ma’idah, 5:32)
Serving others, showing mercy, and standing for justice are also part of life’s purpose.
The Prophet (PBUH) said:
“When a person dies, his deeds come to an end except for three: ongoing charity, beneficial knowledge, or a righteous child who prays for him.”
(Sahih Muslim)
A meaningful life includes helping others and leaving behind good that benefits people even after we are gone.
5. The Hereafter: Our True Home
Allah (SWT) says:
"This worldly life is nothing but diversion and play. And indeed, the home of the Hereafter is the real life, if only they knew."
(Surah Al-‘Ankabut, 29:64)
The Prophet (PBUH) said:
“Be in this world as though you were a stranger or a traveller.”
(Sahih Bukhari)
This hadith teaches us to live with purpose, knowing that this life is short and the real life is in the Hereafter.
6. Salman al-Farisi: A Journey of Purpose
The story of Salman al-Farisi (radiyallahu anhu) shows the human search for truth. He left his home and wealth, went through many struggles even slavery until he found Islam in Madinah. The Prophet (PBUH) said about him:
“Salman is from us, the People of the House.” (Sunan Ibn Majah)
His journey shows that the heart seeks its true purpose, knowing and worshipping Allah.
Conclusion
Life is a trust (amanah). Our time, body and skills are all gifts from Allah.
Allah (SWT) says:
"Every soul shall taste death… So, he who is drawn away from the Fire and admitted to Paradise has certainly attained [success]."
(Surah Al ‘Imran, 3:185)
Let us live with purpose through worship, learning and serving others, so we return to Allah with peace in our hearts.
Allah (SWT) also says:
"O reassured soul, return to your Lord, well-pleased and pleasing [to Him]. So, enter among My servants and enter My Paradise."
(Surah Al-Fajr, 89:27–30)
