Statement on the Anniversary of the
Martyrdom of Mufti Sheikh Hassan Khaled

 Beirut, 16 May 2025
On this solemn occasion, we commemorate the anniversary of the martyrdom
of the Grand Mufti of the Lebanese Republic, Sheikh Hassan Khaled, who was
treacherously assassinated on this day. His loss left a deep sorrow in the hearts
of the Lebanese people, as he was a towering religious and national figure
whose principled stances illuminated pivotal chapters in Lebanon's modern
history.
The martyred Mufti, may God have mercy on him, stood as a symbol of
moderation and national dignity. During some of the most difficult periods in the
country's history, he firmly defended Lebanon's unity and resolutely rejected all
forms of tutelage and subjugation. His voice was the voice of truth; his
conscience, the conscience of the people; and his positions faithfully reflected
the concerns of the nation and the aspirations of its citizens.
His assassination was not merely an attack on an individual, but rather a
deliberate attempt to suppress a free national will that persistently called for
independence, sovereignty, and peaceful coexistence.
On this anniversary, we renew our commitment to the principles for which he
stood and ultimately gave his life. We pray to the Almighty to envelop him in
His infinite mercy, to safeguard Lebanon from discord and division, and to keep
us steadfast on the path of unity and moderation.
