Disappointed by Labor victory, Australia’s Jews hope for a new tack on hate crimesJewish organizations look to incumbent Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to crack down on antisemitic attacks that have proliferated throughout the country By ZEV STUB – The Times of Israel 4 May 2025, Khaled Ghanem's comment on what was reported in the Israeli newspapers: There is widespread discontent over the Australian Labor Party's victory in the parliamentary elections in all Israeli newspapers, with claims that Israel has lost a loyal friend in Peter Dutton. Meanwhile, the new Labor government is demanding intensified efforts against anti semitism, and that this must include all levels. They even refer to the incident outside the Opera House on October 9, 2023, despite the court acquitting all defendants. They are demanding approximately $30 million in compensation for the arson attack on the synagogue and much larger compensation for the burning of the rare Torah in that incident. The Jewish community, which has openly declared its support for the Liberal Party, does not appear to accept that there will be no significant pressure on the Labour government to take strict measures to prevent anti-Semitism. Indeed, this approach of interference in Australia's internal affairs by the Israeli government and media must stop. Just as we were asked to determine whether we are Australian citizens or Palestinians living in Australia, Australian Jews must be clear about their loyalty to Australia and stop taking instructions from the Israeli government against the Labor Party and the Australian government. Perhaps the most important step that the new Australian government must take is to prevent any Australian Jew from serving in the military in Israel, especially participating in combat operations in the occupied Palestinian territories. |
