Sydney - Middle East Times Int’l: At this time of year, I would usually be writing to invite you to my Iftar dinner. I have always enjoyed the opportunity to bring together community leaders and dear friends from the Muslim community to break the fast together during the holy month of Ramadan.
This year I have made a difficult decision not to hold the event in consultation with friends from the community.
At a time of such immense and needless suffering in the Holy Land, when 30,000 Palestinians in Gaza have been killed and 70,000 injured; when over 1.7 million people are hungry and displaced from their homes; and children are dying from hunger, I feel deeply uncomfortable spending thousands of dollars on a feast – even if it is to share with people I hold dear. Instead, I will be donating to charities to support the people of Gaza.
I am especially disappointed as Ramadan coincides with Lent and Easter this year. It would be a wonderful opportunity to come together to emphasise the shared path of sacrifice, prayer, and self-reflection that Christians and Muslims are both undertaking at this time.
I join you in praying for an end to the immense suffering in Gaza and I commit to continue to advocate for an immediate and lasting ceasefire; the release of all hostages seized by Hamas and all Palestinians held in administrative detention without charge in Israel; and the formal recognition of Palestine.
