Sydney-Middle East Times Int'l: Diverting problem waste from landfill has now become even easier after the opening of Parramatta’s first community recycling centre today.
Parramatta Community Recycling Centre, located in North Parramatta, will accept paints, household and car batteries, gas bottles and fluorescent globes and tubes free of charge from community members.
Local residents can also drop off e-waste, polystyrene and textiles at the new facility.
City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Martin Zaiter said the recycling centre would be welcomed by the community as the next step in Council’s waste disposal services.
“Our state-of-the-art local community recycling centre will make it easier for residents to divert problem waste from landfill, helping us to build a more sustainable, healthier and more resilient city,” Cr Zaiter said.
City of Parramatta opens its first Community Recycling Centre.
“Global cities like San Francisco and Singapore are known for prioritising recycling to manage waste sustainably – Parramatta is no different.
“Locals can now do their bit for the environment and recycle their unwanted items at no cost so I encourage everyone to take advantage of this fantastic service.”
The $13 million project is funded by City of Parramatta and the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA).
Member for Parramatta Donna Davis said it was fantastic to see a permanent recycling centre established for the community.
“Greater Sydney is facing a growing waste crisis – which is why solutions like these are so important, so we can increase recycling and ease pressure on our landfills,” Ms Davis said.
“This brand new facility in Parramatta is a fantastic service for our growing population, allowing people to drop off hard-to-recycle items like batteries, paints and oils for free.
“There are more than 100 community recycling centres set up across the state, which have so far collected nearly 30,000 tonnes of household waste thanks to the support of the NSW Government.”
The Parramatta Community Recycling Centre is open from 8am-4pm from Tuesday to Friday and 8am-12pm on Saturdays.
