JASON CLARE, MINISTER FOR EDUCATION, LABOR CAMPAIGN SPOKESPERSON: The wheels are coming off Peter Dutton’s campaign, and so is the mask. It's now pretty clear that Peter Dutton’s campaign to be Prime Minister is just a cut and paste from the United States. First, he cut and paste their policies. Now he's cutting and pasting their slogans. And with all of the chaos that's happening overseas at the moment, I think most Australians are saying they don't want this sort of stuff here, but it's coming. It's coming under Peter Dutton. US style approach to healthcare. US style cuts to education. All of the stuff from the United States that you see on your TV screens, the next day, it's cut and paste by Peter Dutton and put into his policies. He's importing US policies. Now he's even importing US slogans. This bloke is not a joke. He's a threat, and he's making that very, very clear today. Happy to take some questions.
JOURNALIST: Jacinta Price claims that Anthony Albanese has effectively destroyed Australia. What's the response to that? Senator Price does have a considerable audience.
CLARE: We're the best country in the world. Australia is the best country in the world. And if Jacinta Price doesn't realise that, that's really disappointing. What she said today tells us that they just want to import US policies and US slogans to Australia. The only thing she didn't have today was the hat.
JOURNALIST: The President did win the presidency. So what's to say that those sorts of messages are not going to appear here in Australia?
CLARE: What Australians see on their TV screens over the last week and over the last few months would fill them with dread here in Australia. We don't want to see that sort of chaos that's happening on the other side of the world happen here. And by Peter Dutton importing US policies on health and education, remember he talked about cutting the Department of Education, where did you hear that before? It's not the only example. And now one of his representatives cutting and pasting US slogans, gives you a good idea about what Peter Dutton is all about and the threat that he would pose if he ever became the Prime Minister of Australia.
JOURNALIST: Do you reckon they said the quiet bit out loud?
CLARE: I think they said the quiet bit out loud, thank you very much for asking me that.
JOURNALIST: Mr Clare, you and the Treasurer and other frontbenchers are very happy to accuse the Liberals of copying Donald Trump. Why won’t the PM accuse the Liberals of copying Donald Trump?
CLARE: The PM can speak for himself. I'm making it very, very clear here. I think most Australians, when they look at the news one day and then they look at Peter Dutton’s policies the next day, can see what's going on here. It's a cut and paste from the United States.
JOURNALIST: Do you think that’s any risk that Labor might harm the relationship between Australia and the United States for domestic political gain?
CLARE: The relationship between our two countries is strong. The US is our great ally. But that does not mean that Australia needs a US style health system, it doesn't mean that Australia needs a US style education system, it doesn't mean that Australia needs a US style wages system. It just doesn't. Ask any Aussie on the street whether they think they want to see that imported to Australia? I suspect most Aussies will say no.
JOURNALIST: Why isn't the PM brave enough to say what you're saying?
CLARE: Look at what the Prime Minister just said a moment ago. I think he made that point.
JOURNALIST: He doesn't say US. He doesn't say Trump. He sends you guys out to do it. What is the strategy behind that? Because he's scared that he'll have to come up with Donald Trump, having already said that Donald Trump scares the shit out of him, isn’t it?
CLARE: Absolutely wrong.
JOURNALIST: But we have seen the Prime Minister being much more indirect in his comments about Peter Dutton and Donald Trump and frontbenchers be much more direct than him. Is that just a coincidence?
CLARE: I'm just calling it out, right? You've just had a press conference from Peter Dutton and Jacinta Price where they've said, ‘Make Australia Great Again.’ Where do you think you've last heard something like that from? From the United States. I think it's fair and reasonable for me to say to you that they're cutting and pasting policies from the United States, and now they're cutting and pasting slogans from the United States. We don't need to copy from the United States. We're the best country in the world. And it seems like Peter Dutton lot of aggro, not many policies, not many answers. So where does he go to get his answers? Either from the United States, or, in some cases, a rinse and repeat of the policies of Tony Abbott and Scott Morrison.
JOURNALIST: So is it a mistake to have copied previous policies and slogans like ‘Building Back Better’, positive messages that the Democrats have done? Why is it only a problem this time around?
CLARE: When it's a problem is when it's not just slogans, it's policies, Latika. And in this case, it's both. Okay, thanks, guys. |
