Lebanon In his sermon during the Epiphany Mass held in Bkirki this morning, Maronite Patriarch, Cardinal Beshara Boutros al-Rahi, appealed to the President of the Republic and the Prime Minister-designate to come together in a personal reconciliatory encounter and to form the long-awaited rescue government to salvage the country’s deteriorating situation.

“This occasion calls on everyone to reinvigorate themselves internally, to wash their hearts and reconsider their lifestyle and behavior, especially as we are living in the scourge of the Corona pandemic that has curtailed all people, shackled the globe and paralyzed every movement, leaving behind economic, financial, daily-living and social disasters, and more than all that, human casualties every day,” the Patriarch said.

He added: “In light of this occasion’s meaning and its calls for repentance and rejuvenation, and for changing the course and pattern of our lives, I urge His Excellency the President of the Republic and the Prime Minister-designate to hold a personal reconciliation meeting, one that would pull the country out of the depths of collapse, with the formation of a rescue government free from political and partisan disputes, and from quotas…and I ask all the concerned political forces to facilitate this formation, for politics is an honest art of construction."

Meanwhile, and in wake of the outbreak of the Corona epidemic and the rise in infected cases in the country, the Patriarch appealed to private hospitals to ensure the necessary rooms and care units to receive those affected by the virus, thus contributing to society’s protection and safety. Al-Rahi expressed understanding towards the financial suffering of hospitals due to the reluctance of the state to pay their dues; however, he considered it imperative for hospitals to cooperate in treating the infected cases in their respective regions, districts and governorates, while joining the Ministries of Health and the Interior’s renewed call to citizens to abide by the directives given to protect themselves and others against this serious pandemic.

On a different note, the Patriarch also addressed a call to the banking sector, urging banks to implement the student dollar law, so that the students' parents can transfer money to their children pursuing their higher studies abroad. “It is the right of these students to live with dignity, supported by their parents' money deposited in banks, and to pay their university tuition fees and secure their food, drink and housing expenses,” he said.

“We turn to you, our Lord Almighty, with these three pleas, hoping that they would fall into the hearts of those to whom they are addressed…and we pray that we may be renewed with the grace of your baptism to be a new creation that reflects your holiness,” Al-Rahi concluded.
