Visit to Myanmar

11 June 2018

I will visit Myanmar from 11-14 June to open formally Australia’s new Embassy in Yangon and meet with Myanmar government officials, and humanitarian and development partners.

This will be my second visit to Myanmar, highlighting the importance of our development cooperation program and efforts to understand better Myanmar’s complex challenges and identify ways we can work together to address them.

As part of my visit I look forward to meeting State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi and Ministers in Nay Pyi Taw.

I will also travel to Sittwe, where I will meet the Chief Minister of Rakhine State, as well as representatives of UN agencies, to discuss the situation in Rakhine.

While in Sittwe, I will visit the Thet Kae Pyin camp for Internally Displaced Persons to see first-hand the situation on the ground, and how Australia’s assistance is providing essential protection outcomes for women and children in central Rakhine.
