- European railways become ground zero for the migrant crisis— LONDON — European railways were ground zero Wednesday in faltering efforts to contain the continent’s burgeoning refugee crisis, with thousands of asylum-seekers camped out at Hungary’s main train station and service between Paris and London disrupted overnight after reports of migrants on the tracks. A day after Hungary temporarily halted rail traffic at Budapest’s grand 19th century station, at least 2,000 asylum-seekers remained stranded, with Hungarian authorities refusing to let them travel onward to Austria and Germany. - A Zimbabwean dissident was either brave or reckless. Now he’s missing.— HARARE, Zimbabwe — In one of the world’s oldest autocracies, Itai Dzamara set a dangerous goal: He would bring down 91-year-old President Robert Mugabe. Starting last year, Dzamara, 36, marched through this city’s streets holding a placard reading “Mugabe must go.” He demonstrated in front of parliament. He delivered a petition to the president’s office, demanding his resignation. He rose to fame for being either brave or reckless, depending on whom you asked. By Kevin Sieff

- Afghan villagers skeptical as U.S. reopens probe into 2013 killings— MAIDAN SHAHR, Afghanistan — For the villagers of Nerkh district, it’s a matter of too little, too late. Too little: The decision by the U.S. military, first reported last week, to reopen a criminal investigation into the deaths of at least 18 Afghan civilians who were allegedly slain by an Army Special Forces A-team. Too late: The killings unfolded between 2012 and 2013. With so much time having passed, few expect that justice will be served. By Sayed Salahuddin and Sudarsan Raghavan

- Post-ABC Poll: Hillary Clinton’s image is struggling, but she’s no Donald Trump or Jeb Bush— It's been a bad summer for Hillary Rodham Clinton's polling numbers, and a new Washington Post-ABC News poll brings additional bad news for her brand. But it also shows something else: She continues to be popular among a broad coalition of Democrats, and is still better liked than GOP heavyweights Donald Trump and Jeb Bush with the public at large. - Clinton, using private server, wrote and sent e-mails now deemed classified— While she was secretary of state, Hillary Rodham Clinton wrote and sent at least six e-mails using her private server that contained what government officials now say is classified information, according to thousands of e-mails released by the State Department. Although government officials deemed the e-mails classified after Clinton left office, they could complicate her efforts to move beyond the political fallout from the controversy. They suggest that her role in distributing sensitive material via her private e-mail system went beyond receiving notes written by others, and appears to contradict earlier public statements in which she denied sending or receiving e-mails containing classified information. - It’s on: Jeb Bush embraces a risky fight with Donald Trump— MIAMI — Jeb Bush went on the offensive Tuesday against GOP presidential front-runner and frequent antagonist Donald Trump, releasing an attack video portraying the mogul as a closet liberal and signaling that he will attempt to bring Trump down in coming weeks. “He attacks me every day. He attacks me every day with barbarities,” Bush said in Spanish in response to questions from reporters at a Presbyterian school here. “They’re not true. What we did today was to put out in his words to show that he’s not conservative.” By Ed O'Keefe and Sean Sullivan

- How Carly Fiorina earned a spot on the big stage at the GOP debate— The organizers of the next Republican presidential debate have announced changes to debate criteria that mean former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina will almost certainly join the rest of the top-tier candidates on the main stage at the Reagan Library on Sept. 16. "CNN reevaluated its criteria and decided to add a provision that better reflects the state of the race since the first Republican presidential debate in August," the network announced. "Now, any candidate who ranks in the top 10 in polling between August 6 and September 10 will be included." By Karen Tumulty

- Obama visits receding glacier in Alaska to highlight climate change— SEWARD, Alaska — President Obama has often complained that Congress moves at a glacial pace, and on Tuesday saw a glacier that might be moving a bit faster than some pieces of legislation. Standing near the foot of the Exit Glacier, which has receded 1.25 miles since 1815 and 187 feet last year alone, Obama said “this is as good of a signpost of what we’re dealing with it comes to climate change as just about anything.” By Steven Mufson

- U.S. launches secret drone campaign to hunt Islamic State leaders in Syria— The CIA and U.S. Special Operations forces have launched a secret campaign to hunt terrorism suspects in Syria as part of a targeted killing program that is run separately from the broader U.S. military offensive against the Islamic State, U.S. officials said. The CIA and the Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) are flying drones over Syria in a collaboration responsible for several recent strikes against senior Islamic State operatives, the officials said. Among those killed was a British militant thought to be an architect of the terrorist group’s effort to use social media to incite attacks in the United States, the officials said. By Greg Miller

- Wildfires have now burned a massive 8 million acres across the U.S.— As of Tuesday, according to the National Interagency Fire Center, more than 8 million acres have burned in U.S. wildfires in 2015. 8,202,557 of them, to be precise. That’s an area larger than the state of Maryland. And the numbers are still growing: 65 large fires are currently raging across the country, particularly in California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Montana. That includes three Washington state fires or fire complexes that are larger than 100,000 acres burned. By Chris Mooney

- What Netflix’s new maternity leave policy doesn’t tell us about inequality— Activists gathered today at Netflix's corporate headquarters in Los Gatos, Calif., to protest a new workforce policy: Granting unlimited paid maternity leave to the relatively well-compensated workers on its digital side, but not the line workers who stuff DVDs into envelopes. While the new policy was greeted last month with a lot of fanfare and positive press, groups like the Working Families Party and NARAL Pro-Choice America have decried it as an egregious example of technology-driven inequality. As the industry attempts to shake its guy-heavy image by recruiting and retaining women, Netflix announced an incredibly generous benefit for new mothers in hard-to-fill positions -- but left out the blue collar workers who are easier to replace. Tens of thousands of people signed petitions protesting the decision. By Lydia DePillis

- A case that Costco and other warehouse clubs have transformed retail more than Amazon— From the arrival of e-books and digital music in the 1990’s to the recent explosion of online subscription services such as Stitch Fix or Birchbox, it’s easy to see just how dramatically e-commerce has changed our shopping routines. And yet, according to new research, there’s another shopping trend that has had an even more transformative effect on the retail industry during the last two decades: The rise of Costco, Sam’s Club and other warehouse clubs. - ‘War Room’ displays box office clout of a faith-based audience— In a year of great box office triumphs, a low-budget movie with an African American cast and overt Christian teachings has emerged as a breakout surprise. “War Room,” a movie beckoning audiences to prayer, nearly topped ticket sales last weekend even though its release was limited to a relatively small number of theaters. Behind the film’s popularity was a deepening partnership between the filmmakers and a network of influential pastors, which delivered millions of viewers without the need for Hollywood’s typical promotion vehicles of expensive TV ads and global media tours.
