ECCV applauds new Victoria Police Commissioner for reaching out to Muslim youth

The Ethnic Communities’ Council of Victoria (ECCV) has commended the new Victoria Police Chief Commissioner, Mr Graham Ashton, for hosting an important Muslim celebration – an Iftar Ramadan dinner   – on his first day in office on July 1.

ECCV Chairperson, Eddie Micallef, said it was an important and powerfully symbolic act that the head of Victoria Police would go to such lengths to prioritise participating in an important Muslim celebration at the very beginning of his tenure.

“The theme of the evening was ‘Youth’, and this provided an important opportunity to continue to promote an ongoing dialogue between young people of Muslim background and members of Victoria Police at the highest levels,” Mr Micallef said.

“Graham Ashton is to be applauded for using his first day in office to attend a dinner that is of great importance to the Muslim community, and to have as its key focus the promotion of a dialogue with young people from Muslim backgrounds.”

Mr Micallef said the event, which the ECCV attended, provided a good opportunity for integration with members of Victoria Police and members of cultural and faith-based backgrounds

“We applaud Mr Ashton’s placing high significance on engaging with youth, and the fact that he has indicated Victoria Police has the challenge in the future of working hard to have greater understanding of ‘young voices’.

“There have been extensive media reports of the problems and difficulties some young people have faced with issues that impact on social cohesion. The fact that the Chief of Victoria Police is prepared to host a dinner celebrating Ramadan, with a focus on youth, is certainly an important benchmark for the future.”

Mr Micallef said Commander Sue Clark, as master of ceremonies, said the evening was an important opportunity to listen to the perspectives of young people from Islamic and other colleges.

“A panel discussion of seven young people shared their insights into what it's like to be a young person of Islamic faith in Victoria. This was an incredibly worthwhile opportunity for police to hear personal stories about the particular types of difficulties young people from Muslim backgrounds may face within the larger community.

“This is the 10th anniversary of the Victoria Police Dinner - which is significant milestone. The hosting of the dinner in celebration of Ramadan is an important connection between police and the Muslim community in this state, and Graham Ashton and his colleagues are to be congratulated for making such a significant statement that goes to the promotion of social cohesion.”
