Kuwaiti FM addresses EU foreign ministers, invited to EU-GCC meeting

Sydney - M E Times Int'l: Kuwaiti Minister of Foreign Affairs and State Minister for Cabinet Affairs Sheikh Dr. Ahmad Nasser Al-Mohammad Al-Sabah participated as a guest of honour in a working breakfast at the invitation of the Cyprus Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ioannis Kasoulidis, along with EU foreign ministers in Brussels.

The meeting discussed regional and international issues, and explored the relations between Kuwait and the EU as well as ways to strengthen the bilateral ties in fields of common interests.

“We had a chance to exchange our perspective regarding our work on how to enhance our cooperation and our dimension between EU and Kuwait,” Sheikh Ahmed Nasser said.

“I had the chance to provide the EU foreign ministers with our perspective in Kuwait regarding challenges that engulf us. I have heard from our EU partners about their outmost engagement with Kuwait and with the region and their clear and firm stance in security and stability of the region,” said the Kuwaiti foreign minister.

Kasoulidis thanked the Sheikh Ahmad Nasser for giving such an interesting presentation on understanding the region.

 “Your presentation was extremely interesting,” said the Cypriot minister.

The Kuwaiti foreign minister met Slovenian FM Anze Logar to discuss bilateral relations.

“We see great opportunity to enhance our co-operation. Our bilateral exchanges are modest and there are several fields where we can really enhance our co-operation be in cyber security and artificial intelligence and exchange of information in technology in the health sector,” Logar said.

They decided to raise the frequency of bilateral meetings, he said and voiced optimism that there will be concrete result from “our meeting”.

“Kuwait and Slovenia are like-minded countries. We all defend peace and security and seek to bring all the crises to a peaceful solution,” he said.

Sheikh Ahmad Nasser also discussed bilateral ties with Malta’s foreign minister, Evarist Bartolo.

“Our countries have been friends for many, many years. We are two countries (together) not only with the past but with the future,” Bartolo said.

“We understand each other and we can work in different areas, health and education sustainable development, tourism,” he said.

“Kuwait helps us to understand the Gulf, Kuwait helps us to understand the Arab world and we help the Gulf and Kuwait to understand the EU,” he said.

“We can work together for security and peace which we need a lot. Both in the Gulf and in the Mediterranean and the whole world,” said Bartalo.

He added that “relations between Kuwait and Malta have always been very good and we look forward to strengthening our relations.”

EU High Representative Josep Borrell hosted a dinner in honour of the Kuwaiti foreign minister.

Borrell described Kuwait as a close and reliable partner and praised Kuwait’s moderating role in the region.

“Kuwait stands out as a close and reliable partner of the European Union. This meeting will give me the opportunity to underline the appreciation for Kuwait’s moderating role in the region and the intention to reinforce our bilateral relations,” Borrell said.

HONOURARY DINNER

Borrell invited Sheikh Ahmad Nasser for the next EU-Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC) ministerial meeting on February 21 in Brussels to discuss the future of partnership.

“We want to build a broader and strategic partnership with Kuwait and with other GCC members,” he said.

Borrell said they will discuss during their meeting key global issues such as the green and digital transformation as well as oil, renewable energy, trade, investment, security, development co-operation humanitarian assistance.

“Kuwait’s role as the current chair of the Arab League offers an additional opportunity for further engagement on regional challenges and in our shared neighbourhood. So there are many important reasons to meet with the minister,” he said.

Borrell said EU-Kuwait relations are “very good and there is room for improvement as always but certainly we have a strong and profitable relations with Kuwait”.

Sheikh Ahmad Nasser said he was very happy to be in Brussels.

“EU-Kuwait relations are diverse and deep. We highly value these relations; both Kuwait and the EU have the intention of strengthening ties in all sectors,” he said.
