Federal support but no cash for locked-down Victoria in Stage 4

Federal government 'supports' Victoria moving to tougher restrictions

2/8/2020

Melbourne: Education Minister Dan Tehan says it’s in the “national interest” to work with the Andrews government to “get on top of the second Victorian wave”.

News resource has confirmed Victoria will implement tough stage four lockdowns in a bid to drive down the number of COVID-19 cases in the state.

Mr Tehan said the federal government “absolutely supports” Daniel Andrews moving to tougher restrictions, adding they are working “collaboratively and closely” as they seek to address the second wave.

“We’ve got to work and collaborate and be supportive of all their efforts and we’ve got to get on top of it,” he said. “We’ve seen that this can have a devastating impact in terms of the health consequences, and it will have a devastating impact as a result of the economic consequences.

“So, we need to make sure we get on top of this virus in Victoria.”

The Education Minister also offered his support for year 11 and 12 students who are experiencing a difficult year of studies during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Economy Is Keeping 'Reluctant' Trump Voters With Him ...

Many average Trump voters are 'beginning to turn against him'

Many middle-class suburban voters who supported President Donald Trump at the last election are beginning to turn against him, according to the US Studies Centre’s James Brown. With less than 100 days until the Presidential election, President Donald Trump is down in the polls. According to FiveThrityEight’s latest national Presidential polling average, former Vice President Joe Biden holds an eight-point lead over President Trump. More worryingly for the President, Mr Biden also leads in a slew of battleground states, including Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania. The dip in popularity coincides with the COVID-19 crisis, which has also caused the US economy to shrink a whopping annual rate of 32.9% in the second quarter. “The polls didn’t tell the full story last time, we know there are a lot of Trump supporters that don’t come out in these polls, the shy Trump supporters, or those who don’t normally vote who were dragged out by Trump last time,” Mr Brown said. “So it doesn’t tell the full story, but particularly given some of those key states, Florida, Texas, you are seeing some very low approval ratings for Republican governors, Republican leadership and Trump’s handling of the coronavirus, that will have an impact on his electability as well. "The voters who have shifted are those who had a lot more hope about what Trump would be able to achieve, who believed he might have been the wildcard that could reset America’s position internationally, that could reset America’s economy, who get a better life for them and their families.”
