UAE VP stresses GCC leaders keen on backing bloc
DUBAI, -- UAE Vice President, Prime Minister and Dubai Ruler Sheikh Mohammad bin Rashed Al-Maktoum affirmed on Wednesday the keenness of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) leaders on fully supporting and promoting the bloc.
This came during Sheikh Mohammad's reception of the new GCC Secretary General Dr. Nayef Al-Hajraf of Kuwait, who will take office as of early April, Emirati news agency, WAM, reported.
The senior UAE official wished Dr. Al-Hajraf success and progress in his role to serve the interests of member states and their people.
Meanwhile, Al-Hajraf expressed his pride in being appointed to the new post, saying he would strive to serve the interests of the bloc and translate the instructions of its leaders into actions.
Al-Hajraf is the second Kuwaiti and six to take office since the establishment of the bloc in 1981.
Kuwait's Abdullah Beshara was the first GCC chief from 1981-1993, followed by Fahim Al-Qasimi of the UAE (1993-1995), Jamil Al-Hejailan of Saudi Arabia (1995-2002), Abdulrahman Al-Attiyah of Qatar (2002-2011) and Abdullatif Al-Zayani of Bahrain (2011-2020).
