Morrison dismisses claims of an internal battle on climate change 20/01/2020 Prime Minister Scott Morrison is dismissing suggestions he is under internal pressure to take stronger action on climate change. New South Wales Environment Minister Matt Kean told media the horror bushfire season sparked new calls for action from top-ranking Liberal MPs. The ministers wanted Mr Morrison to ensure “prosperity for future generations” and reduce the risk of another major fire season.
Mr Kean said the concerned group “fully support” Mr Morrison but want Australia to become the “energy superpower for the rest of the world”. The prime minister said on Monday it was "all a beat up" and Matt Kean could "focus on hazard reduction and I'll focus emissions reduction".
Parts of Victoria battered by golf ball sized hail 20/01/2020 Victoria has been battered by golf-ball sized hailstones overnight as a major storm front rolls across parts of the state. Welcome rain fell over the Victorian fire grounds with over 30mm of rain falling in eastern parts of the state. The front also brought a heavy deluge, turning streets into rivers while strong winds uprooted trees. Melbourne residents have been told to expect more rain and thunderstorms in the coming days.
World leaders gather in Berlin in bid to resolve escalating civil war 20/01/2020 World leaders have gathered at a Summit in Berlin today, aimed at trying to resolve an escalating civil war in Libya. The rival heads of the two sides fighting for control of the North African state are also attending the long-awaited gathering. They are respectively backed by different foreign powers in a conflict that risks turning Libya into the latest proxy warzone after Syria. German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who is hosting the meeting, hopes to convince the warring factions, with the help of the United Nations, to agree on a lasting ceasefire. |
