BRUSSELS-- A number of Members of European Parliament have expressed their appreciation and praise for His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Jaber's wise and moderate policies to promote peace and stability in the region.

"I heard excellent remarks from the MEPs towards Kuwait and they all praised His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Jaber's wise , moderate and humanitarian policies and efforts and to avoid any kind of escalation," Kuwait's ambassador to the European Union, NATO, Belgium and Luxembourg, Jasem Al Budaiwi, told KUNA in a telephone interview Thursday.

He met eight Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) in Strasbourg where the EP is holding its full session this week.

Al Budaiwi said the MEP's he met during the last two days belong to major political groups from different European countries and who are also members of various EP committees such as the committee on foreign relations, human rights, agriculture , economy.

"The purpose of the meeting was to introduce myself to the new MEPs and to congratulate them on their election as MEPs," he said.

"Most importantly I discussed with them ways to enhance relations between the European Union and Kuwait as well as with the European Parliament," said Al Budaiwi.

The Kuwaiti ambassador said he also took the opportunity to explain to the MEPs where Kuwait stands and its relationship with the EU, the political coordination with the EU and Kuwait's role to promote peace and stability in the region.

He stressed on the high level of coordination and cooperation between the 28 -member European bloc and Kuwait and noted that the recent opening of the EU Delegation in Kuwait will boost the continuous dialogue and enhance the relationship between the two sides.

The Kuwaiti ambassador further explained to the MEPs the recent developments in the Arab Gulf region.

"They all showed keen interest in strengthening relations with Kuwait and to visit Kuwait to get a first hand impression of the country," he said.

Two high-level EP delegations visited Kuwait last year and a number of MEPs are expected to visit the country inn 2020.

Michael Galher an MEP belonging to the European People's party the biggest group in the EP in the meeting with Al Budiawi proposed the idea of initiating a "parliamentary diplomacy".

The German MEP explained that where officials and governments might be unable to reach a decision or a solution to a problem the parliaments can launch a "parliamentary diplomacy" to solve the issues.

The visit to the EP in Strasbourg is in line with the efforts of the Kuwait mission to the EU to keep in constant touch with officials and parliamentarians and the political parties to explain and elaborate on Kuwait's policies and position toward regional and international affairs, added Al Budaiwi.
