Kuwait parliament speaker: lifting of sport ban marks new beginning

07/07/2019

KUWAIT-- Parliament Speaker Marzouq Al-Ghanim said Sunday lifting of international ban on sport would pave way for return of participation of Kuwaiti athletes in tournaments abroad.

Al-Ghanim made the remarks during a meeting with Minister of Information and Minister of State for Youth Mohammad Al-Jabri, who was accompanied by president of Kuwait Olympic Committee (KOC) Sheikh Fahad Nasser Al-Sabah and KOC board members, and Director General of the Public Authority for Sport (PAS) Humoud Fleiteh, Al-Dustoor news network said.

Al-Ghanim expressed gratitude for His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah for his follow up of the sport file until the International Olympic Committee (IOC) lifted the ban.

Al-Ghanim thanked former Ministers of State for youth, PAS and the parliament's Sport and Youth committee for contributing to the lifting of the ban.

IOC's Executive Board (EB) last Friday fully lifted the suspension of KOC as a result of the successful implementation of a roadmap agreed between all parties.

The first step of the roadmap (revision and adoption of new statutes for the sports clubs, followed by elections) was successfully completed within the prescribed deadline (end of January 2019).

The second step (revision and adoption of new statutes for the National Sports Federations, followed by elections) was implemented in close coordination with the International Federations (IFs) concerned, and was successfully completed in early June 2019.

The third and last step (revision and adoption of the KOC statutes, followed by KOC elections) was successfully completed on 30 June 2019, with the holding of the KOC Elective General Assembly.

The KOC was suspended by decision of the IOC EB on 27 October 2015, to protect the Olympic Movement in Kuwait from undue government interference, after a sports law that was not compatible with the basic principles that govern the Olympic Movement was passed in the country.

Al-Ghanim said cooperation between the parliament and government resulted in the lifting of the ban.

He expressed confidence in current sport officials to help the athletes compete in regional and international championships.

Al-Jabri, for his part, thanked Al-Ghanim for his "limitless support" for a resolution of this thorny issue, solved upon guidance of His Highness the Amir, His Highness the Crown Prince and His Highness the Prime Minister.

KOC President Sheikh Fahad said KOC board members were very ambitious and sought to develop Kuwait sport.
