LOCALS Have a Sneak Peek Inside New M4 Tunnels 16 June 2019 About one thousand local residents have had an exclusive look inside the new 5.5 kilometre M4 Tunnels, which will allow drivers to avoid 22 sets of traffic lights on Parramatta Road between Homebush and Haberfield. Premier Gladys Berejiklian, Treasurer Dominic Perrottet and Minister for Roads Andrew Constance today welcomed residents into the first underground section of WestConnex as part of a community open day. “With the tunnels within months of opening now is a great time for a behind-the-scenes look at the progress that has been made,” Ms Berejiklian said. “Drivers will be able to travel from Penrith to the Anzac Bridge without having to stop at a single set of traffic lights, while a journey from Parramatta to the Airport will fall by up to 40 minutes.” 
Mr Perrottet said the construction of the $3.8 billion M4 tunnels and the wider WestConnex project is only possible because of the NSW Government’s strong financial management. “We worked hard to repair the budget so we could get on with the job of delivering mega infrastructure projects like WestConnex,” Mr Perrottet said. 
“This project will slash travel times, allowing drivers to spend less time sitting in traffic and more time doing what they want.” Mr Constance said the upcoming opening of the new M4 Tunnels is another important step towards delivering WestConnex, which includes the New M5, the M4-M5 Link and the Rozelle Interchange. “The M4 Tunnels are almost complete and once they do open to traffic they will remove up to 10,000 trucks a day from Parramatta Road and double the capacity of that existing road corridor,” Mr Constance said. “Once all of WestConnex complete in 2023 there will be more than 30 kilometres of continuous motorway, linking Sydney’s west and southwest with the city, airport and port precinct.” For drone footage of the M4 Tunnels: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/kmrjy7n3c4tb473/AACYGbySLAYILMTQ-GBcRfRZa?dl=0 |
