Speech by Dr. Obaid Al Hairi Salem Al Ketbi, UAE Ambassador to Australia

On this exceptional occasion we come together to celebrate the extraordinary milestones of the United Arab Emirates since our foundation in 1971.  These achievements and milestones are a testament to the vigilant and brilliant leadership of the founding father of the United Arab Emirates. The late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan  and the fellow leaders. We pay tribute to, and recognise, the leadership of the UAE in pioneering a model of sustainable improvement, progress and

prosperity in the region.  That is -- His Highness sheikh Sultan bin Zayed Al Nahyan President of the United Arab Emirates, his Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Rashed Vice President, Prime Minister and ruler of Dubai, His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan Crown Prince and deputy the supreme commander of UAE arm forces, His Highness sheikh Abdullah Minister of foreign affairs and International corporation.

I would like to acknowledge one of our great accomplishments which are of significant importance and most relevant here. That is the relationship we have with Australia. Since the establishment of diplomatic relations between our two counties in 1997, we have achieved so much to be proud of.  This year marks the 20th anniversary of the official diplomatic relations between our two countries.  We are partners in the Middle East and our work to diversify economies is setting international benchmarks at all levels.

Our public diplomacy initiative provides further opportunities to strengthen our relationship with Australia.  Our two nations share similar values. We channel the role of law, human rights, multiculturalism, innovation, sustainability and progress and we have joined forces in combating extremism and terrorism in all its many forms throughout our region and around the world. The UAE has been and will continue to play an important role in the international arena. Foreign aid and development assistance represent a cornerstone of UAE foreign policy; the UAE has persistently been ranked the world’s number one donor per GDI for foreign aid in the last three years.

2017 is the year of giving in the UAE and as it comes to a close we’re reflect on the many gestures of giving that we undertook.  As a nation continue the generous transition tradition of our founding fathers and realise their vision.  The world has come to realise that the UAE has become an important regional cultural hub with the opening of the world renowned Louvre museum in Abu Dhabi. The UAE also has much to look forward to as we approach 2020. Most notably we rejoice and welcoming the year of Zayed  in 2018; the year that honours and reaffirm the religion of our founding father, The late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.
