Mogherini: Solving Palestine question top priority for EU

27/03/2017

BRUSSELS-- EU High Representative Federica Mogherini underlined here Monday the EU's commitment to a two-state solution to the Palestine question and no change in EU's position on Al-Quds (Jerusalem) as the future capital of two states.

"Peace between Israel and Palestine is a top priority for the EU and will remain a top priority in our political agenda. We remain committed to a negotiated two-state solution. That remains for us the only viable way to end the conflict and all claim," she told a press conference after holding talks with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas this afternoon.

"Our EU policy on this has not changed. Our position on Jerusalem as future capital of both states has not changed and we support Palestinian presence in East Jerusalem," she noted.

The EU foreign policy chief welcomed the fact that the US Administration is showing interest in solving the Middle East peace process.

"We agreed to coordinate closely positions, including tomorrow and the day after tomorrow. I will have the honour to be in the Summit of the Arab League where again we will discuss our common position between the EU and the League of Arab States on many different issues, including the Israeli-Palestinian peace process," she added.

On his part, Abbas told the joint press conference that "the international references and the international agreements on which we base ourselves and among which the EU decisions to make peace in our region, are all based on the two-state solution in line with the 67 borders Palestine and Israel living together in peace." He warned, "occupying policies will not bring about peace in our region because peace and stability can only be reached with relations of good neighbours and this is precisely what we are ready to do to be good neighbours and we are hoping that the Israelis will not miss this opportunity in order to make peace." Abbas also held talks with the President of the European Council, Donald Tusk, President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker and the President of the European Parliament Antonio Tajani earlier today.
